About this view

Most cards per match by league — yellow, red and foul rankings

The Discipline view ranks all 1,200+ leagues by cards per match (yellow + red combined), yellow cards per match, red cards per match and fouls per match. The most physically intense competitions — typically South American and Southern European top flights — consistently clear 5.0+ cards per match, driven by strict refereeing thresholds and high contact rates. Calmer, possession-heavy leagues — often Asian and Scandinavian top flights — sit at the bottom of the table, frequently under 3.5 cards per match.

Yellow cards are the most frequent disciplinary action; red cards are rarer but tilt match outcomes much more. The Cards/Match column adds them together for a single physical-intensity score. Fouls per match adds context — high foul counts usually but not always lead to high card counts, since referee strictness varies league to league.

Discipline data is computed from full-time match data only, since reliable half-time card splits aren't available across every competition. Sort any column to find the most card-heavy or card-light leagues right now, and switch periods to spot recent shifts in refereeing.

Glossary

What each discipline column means

Cards/Match
Total yellow + red cards combined per match. The headline disciplinary read for each league.
Yellow/Match
Average yellow cards per match. The most common disciplinary action across all football leagues.
Red/Match
Average red cards (direct + second yellow) per match. Rare events, but they swing match outcomes.
Fouls/Match
Average fouls committed per match. Doesn't always track 1:1 with cards — referee thresholds vary.
Saves/Match
Average goalkeeper saves per match. High counts indicate goalkeepers are tested often.
Methodology

How card and foul averages are calculated

Cards and fouls come straight from match-level data — no derivation, no estimates.

  1. Data source. Yellow cards, red cards (direct and second-yellow) and fouls committed are aggregated from sports data APIs and processed through our statistical pipeline. Saves data uses the same source where available.
  2. Calculation. Per-league averages are totals divided by matches played in the selected window. Cards/Match sums yellows and reds into a single physical-intensity score.
  3. Refresh cadence. Discipline numbers re-aggregate within a few hours after each match completes. The Period filter (Season → Last 5/10/20) instantly re-windows the calculation.
  4. Limits. Half-time card splits aren't reliably available across every league we track, so discipline numbers are full-time totals only. Refereeing thresholds vary by country, so cross-cultural comparisons read less cleanly than within-region ones.
FAQ

Most cards per match by league — frequently asked questions

Which European league has the most cards per match?

Card averages cluster by region and refereeing style. Among European top flights, the most physically intense competitions clear 5.0 cards per match, while calmer, possession-heavy leagues sit between 3.5 and 4.0. South American top flights tend to skew highest, with 5.5+ per match common. The live ranking shifts season to season — sort the Cards/Match column to see which competition leads right now.

Why is discipline data only for full-time matches?

Reliable half-time card splits aren't published across every league we track. To keep the comparison apples-to-apples, the Discipline view shows full-time totals only.

Why don't fouls always match card counts?

Referees in different leagues have very different thresholds for turning a foul into a booking. Some leagues see frequent fouls but few cards because referees prefer warnings; others go straight to the pocket.

Which football leagues have the fewest cards per match?

Asian and Scandinavian top flights consistently sit at the bottom of the cards-per-match table, often under 3.5 per game. Lower physical intensity, more lenient refereeing thresholds and a possession-heavy tactical style all contribute. Sort the Cards/Match column ascending to see the global "cleanest" leagues right now.

Why ProBettingHub for league statistics

Three reasons analysts pick this dashboard for cross-league research — especially since FBref restricted its advanced data in January 2026.

1,200+ leagues, one ranking

Premier League next to Saudi Pro League next to J-League. Every major competition the world plays — from UEFA top flights to South American Primeras to Asian Super Leagues — ranked side-by-side on the same metric in seconds.

Every metric, every column sortable

Goals per match, xG, cards, corners, BTTS, over/under thresholds and home/draw/away splits. Click any column header to re-rank all 1,200+ leagues by that metric. Switch the period filter to compare whole-season averages against last-5, last-10 or last-20 windows.

Stats, not picks

We don't sell predictions and we don't push tips. We surface the raw league-level numbers — xG, finishing efficiency, defensive consistency, refereeing intensity — so you can read each league for what it actually is, not what someone wants to sell you.
